Intestinal Permeability (Leaky Gut)
The intestinal lining keeps out undigested protein, bacteria and large molecules from passing into the bloodstream. Infection, antibiotics, alcohol, diet or prescription medications can cause the intestinal lining to become inflamed. When this happens, the intestinal lining weakens and gaps appear (permeability), allowing large particles and toxins to escape into the body. This puts your immune system into high gear, producing antibodies to locate and attack foreign elements as they are perceived as invaders. This condition is known as intestinal permeability or "leaky gut".
Leaky gut syndrome is well-understood by Integrative Medical Doctors and is associated with a long list of illnesses. Leaky gut is less of a disease than it is a pathway for how toxins enter the body through the GI tract. Once those toxins escape the GI tract and enter the body, they create all kinds of issues.
In addition to causing digestive discomfort, leaky gut can trigger:
Multiple food allergies or food sensitivities
There are a couple of reasons that leaky gut is associated with chronic illnesses.
1. Approximately 70% of your immune system cells are
found in your gut.
2. The chronic inflammation caused by leaky gut is what
can lead to inflammatory disease.
Many of the patients who come to Restorasis Integrative & Functional Medicine are often those who have seen specialists, have had "normal" lab results but still know that something is wrong.
If you are experiencing symptoms of leaky gut, one of the most highly effective ways to find out is through testing for proteins that regulate the size and opening of the intestinal wall. In addition, taking a food sensitivity or allergy test can also be helpful for determining whether you have leaky gut, as food sensitivities and allergies can develop from increased intestinal permeability.
