Candida is a fungal organism that typically inhabits a healthy intestinal tract at low levels.  There are several hundred species of candida which can be found in plants and plant by-products (herbs, spices, drywall, paper, fabric, etc.), soil and water.  Candida can quickly overgrow through a diet high in sugar, prolonged stress, birth control pills, hormonal imbalances, antibiotics, alcohol, mold and environmental toxins.

Symptoms of candida overgrowth can range from mild to severe, manifesting in conditions such as skin rashes, vaginitis, thrush, fungal nails, diaper rash and mucus membrane irritation.  When candida affects the intestines, symptoms may include constipation, diarrhea, gas and bloating.  These symptoms may mimic or contribute to other disorders such as Chron's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis and gallbladder disease.  If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, you may have candida.

The use of antifungal medications is inadequate as a stand-alone tretment for candida overgrowth.  An overall effective program to treat candida must include eliminating sugary, processed foods and drinks and to increase nutrient-dense foods that boost the immune system.
