Some women are concerned that estrogen may increase their risk for breast cancer or heart disease. These fears have mainly been perpetuated by the Women’s Health initiative study. The study revealed women taking the synthetic hormone Premero appeared to have an increased risk of heart attack and/or breast cancer.
This study actually highlights the risk of estrogen replacement therapy with non bio-identical, or synthetic hormones, which are typically administered in a “one size fits all” fashion. Synthetic, or chemically derived hormones, are foreign to a woman’s body. Conversely, bio-identical hormones, the ones we use at Sylvana, are naturally found in a woman’s body and have not been shown to carry the same degree of risk. In fact, there is a growing body of evidence that bio-HRT is associated with decreasing risks of breast cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis and other diseases commonly associated with aging.
If you are experiencing symptoms of hormonal imbalance, we encourage you to schedule your free consultation at Sylvana Institute to see if bio-identical hormone replacement therapy may be right for you. If you and Dr. Jeanne O’Connell decide that bio-HRT is the right approach, you will be prescribed the lowest specific hormone dosage that will meet your needs.
