A popular weight loss program offered in Europe for over fifty years is making headlines in the U.S. The hCG weight loss protocol received a generally favorable review from celebrity physician Dr. Oz.

Under a physician’s care, the prescription may be administered by nasal spray, injection or topical cream. The protocol uses a naturally occurring hormone, human Chorionic Gonadatropin (hCG), to encourage the body to use stored fat as fuel. Patients lose weight rapidly, typically ½ pound to a pound per day. The diet ultimately resets the body’s metabolic rate thus greatly reducing the odds of regaining pounds lost.

On his show, Dr. Oz cautioned viewers not to buy hCG supplements online, at the drugstore or at health food stores as the integrity of the drug cannot be assured. Oz urged interested persons to consult a physician who prescribes hCG and to undertake the diet under a doctor’s care.
